Everyone has told you that parenting comes with great power and responsibility; yet no one gave you a parenting handbook when your baby was born. Here are a few simple parenting tips that one picks up along the way. These tips will help you reduce stress and keep you healthy, while you bond with and raise your little one.
.Sleep whenever you can- Sorry, but your days of peaceful sleep on clean bed sheets are over. Grab the chance whenever you can and stop fretting over the housework. You need energy to survive the day.
.Carry a baby bag- Love your designer bags? You will have to store them away for a couple of years and carry a sensible all purpose bag with diapers, food, toys, change of clothes and a charged mobile phone.
.Say goodbye to white clothes- Wait a few years before you brave wearing a nice white outfit. Your child is still mastering the art of eating, pooping and toppling things over you.
.Take five, take ten- It is okay to have some “me time”. Stop feeling guilty about every minute you do not dance attendance to them. Read a book, watch a movie. Sometimes your toddler can be left to amuse him/her selves.
.Keep dangerous things out of reach- Permanent markers, pens can be dangerous for walls and clean bed sheets- as can scissors, if the latest summer camp had a craft class.
.Download it or watch it on DVD- Most probably your toddler will need to go to the bathroom during the most crucial scene in the movie. So forget cinema theaters for a while and watch them at home where you can pause till you are free to focus.
.Address them by names- Learn their friends’ names as well as the names they have for their toys. They to need feel that their relationships count. You might become privy to a lot of “secrets” that way.
.The teacher is always right- He/She is the first adult your toddler listens to and he/she is infallible. Do not risk countering anything he/she says. In fact, use it your advantage when you want your little one to give up undesirable habits. “I don’t think your teacher will like this” should do the trick.
.Remember, walls have ears- It is a bad idea to talk about things you do not want to share with others in front of your toddler. You never know when they are likely to announce it to the rest of the world.
.Choose your battles- Saying a unilateral “No” to all chocolates, chips and such food is not a wise decision. There are likely to be more tantrums when they realize their friends are allowed to have them. Give in to the demands once in a while, eat some yourself, just to maintain parental sanity!
Like all first time parents, you will learn a lot on the go. There will be good days and bad days. The key is to enjoy it while it lasts!
