The first time you hold your baby, you realize your beautiful journey of motherhood has just begun. It’s a journey which completes you as a woman, and brings in loads of responsibilities towards your little wonder.
The first question that mother of a new-born have is when to start breastfeeding? Till when one needs to breastfeed her child and if breastfeeding is really necessary?
When to start breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding needs to be started the moment your baby asks for its first feed. It may be immediately after birth, or within a couple of hours. In the beginning, you may get yellow-gold colored thick liquid which may not look like milk and confuse you, but it’s not the case. This yellow liquid is known as Colostrum which is high in nutrient and helps in developing baby’s immunity. So don’t wait for anything, and start feeding your baby with your milk immediately.
Till when one needs to breastfeed?
Ideally, you should breastfeed your baby as long as you can. It may be till 9 months or even beyond that. But in case you have other commitments (joining back work or some other reasons etc.), you may use a breast pump to store the milk for feeding your baby while you are away. It is highly recommended that your baby gets your milk at least for the first six months, unless your body doesn’t produce sufficient milk. In such a case, consult your doctor.
Is breastfeeding necessary?
Yes, breastfeeding is extremely important and necessary to ensure developing your baby’s immunity. Mother’s milk is best for a baby for supplying all the necessary nutrients responsible for early stage growth and development. Babies which are breastfed exhibit high immunity as compared to babies who don’t get mother’s milk. A lower immunity results in more visits to the pediatrician, taking more medicines, resulting in further reduction of immunity.
A mother’s milk has all the essential nutrients, vitamins, iron etc in the right proportion for the baby, which cannot be matched by any other source of supplements. It is also the purest form of milk that can be fed to a baby as it is completely untouched. In case the milk is fed using a bottle (stored using a pump), the probability of bottle carrying certain impurities is high as it is prone to be touched during the process of feeding, results in not being 100% clean in-spite of the fact that it’s sterilized.
To conclude, Mothers milk is the best source of Nutrition in the right proportion for a newborn, developing high level of immunity, purest of all supplements available in the market. So don’t deprive your child from Breastfeeding it is the best gift your little one deserves.
