In a nuclear set-up, women are by themselves for most of the day. Their partners leave for work and then they have to do everything by themselves. You can let your neighbours know about your pregnant wife so that they could come for help if there is an emergency. This will also keep them engaged because staying alone all day at home, without talking to anybody can lead to depression.
Talking to other people will also help you to understand aspects of pregnancy and child rearing that they may have already been through. You can listen to the stories of the times they were pregnant and how they dealt with it. You can share your feelings and talk about your doubts and apprehensions. Sometimes you can invite your friends or relative for dinner and cook for them. It will keep you engaged and active, away from the monotonous routine.
Keeping a phone directory handy and emergency contact on display at a prominent place is very essential for mothers who stay alone. As a spouse or partner, you must regularly call your wife and ask about her health, even though you are at work. It gives a certain assurance to your partner who may be panicking due to the changes in her body and emotions.
Feeling scared and having hallucinations is very common during pregnancy. If you need to use the lift, please ensure that there is either a liftman or someone else travelling up or down with you. Feeling claustrophobic during pregnancy is common and anticipating breakdown of lift can lead to panic in some pregnant women. If you are to take stairs, make sure you go up and down the stairs slowly.
If you are driving, please wear your seatbelt.
If you are a working woman, please let your colleague, whom you are closest to, know that you are pregnant. This will help you when you are feeling uneasy or sick at work; your colleague will inform your partner and help you out.
If your colleagues smoke, try to stay away from the smoking zone as passive smoking is as harmful as active smoking. Carry healthy snacks in your bag while you leave for work. Try to avoid fast food, canteen food or any outside food for that matter. You can always have hired help to make food for you before you leave for work. At workplace also, take care while climbing stairs, or using the escalator. If you feel suffocated in the lift or you are scared of using it, please stick to stairs. If you drive your own car to work try to avoid the rush hours and stay away from heavy traffic. Always carry water to keep your body as hydrated.
Your extended family and friends can be a source of emotional support during these months. Always keep in touch with them and make sure to ask for help whenever you need it.
