So far, your marital and family life was scheduled in a set fashion. But after delivery, you have to now play host to a new member in the family; the baby would now be the most important stakeholder in your life and would be at the centre of all demands.
Pre-emptive time management is hence of great essence. The mother would, in most cases, feel weak initially. Her activities would be limited and the time she used to earlier devote to the family, would now be greatly reduced.
It is here that the other parent or the caregiver steps in and fends for the family and the baby, when the mother is under rest.
This is true for both homemakers as well as working mothers.Homemakers have the luxury of spending all her time dedicated to baby. For working mothers, the Maternity Benefit Act in India prescribes six-week long paid leave post delivery.
This time should be aptly used to regain composure, bond with the baby and get accustomed to the new member in the house.Although the baby may take away all your time, but workaholic women may still find this period, in some cases, slightly dull and boring without any office and job to go back to.
It is advisable to not exert yourself during the initial days, but rather rest at home.
For dads, the initial days are also trying times. In case of joint families there maybe relatives and caregivers to take care of the baby while the father is at work. However, it is advisable to avail paternity leaves to be beside your baby right after delivery. Central government employees are entitled to 15-day leaves within six months of delivery. Private companies are guided by prescribed regulation and most companies nowadays are in favour of paternity leaves. More than just for convenience, having both the parents home at least for a few days post delivery allows the new parents to bond better with the new-born.
Apart from this, on a day-to-day level, you may need to alter some aspects of your lifestyle. No more sleeping and waking up when you please. All your activities will now be dictated by the baby’s eating, sleeping, and crying.
You lifestyle in terms of your dressing and socialising will also undergo transformation.
One may feel slightly unnerved with all these sudden metamorphoses, but then adopting a healthy lifestyle goes a long way in ensuring a smooth growing-up ambience for the child.
It is advisable to talk to your partner about all these small changes and alterations in your lifestyle and time schedule beforehand, to be able to smoothly tackle the initial day jitters post delivery.
