As your baby has arrived you will have plenty of occasions to hold him/her. If you’re holding your baby for the first time, it is natural to feel a bit uncomfortable or afraid of dropping him/her. Moreover your baby’s neck muscles are still developing and weak, which means that they need a lot of head, support. Here are a few tips on how to hold or carry your newborn:
For the first timers, relax and get seated in a comfortable sofa or chair. Ask some one to handover the baby to you. Take the baby with your one hand on supporting the back and the other supporting the head.
Once you are comfortable, typically after a few days or a week, you may try to hold your baby by resting him/her on your chest and shoulder while supporting their body and neck with your hand.
If your baby is a month or older and you have to hold/carry your baby for a longer time, you may choose to use a front carrier. Choose one with adequate head support.
