The Lamaze technique, also known as the psychoprophylactic method or simply Lamaze, started as a prepared childbirth technique popularised in the 1940’s by a French obstetrician Dr. Fernand Lamaze. It is based on his observation in the Soviet Union as an alternative to the use of medical intervention during childbirth.
Today Lamaze has become one of the most popular ways to get information about pregnancy, birth, and parenting through its many educational offering on and off line. Lamaze International trains childbirth educators around the world.
Modern Lamaze childbirth classes teaches expectant mothers many ways to work with the labour process to reduce the pain associated with childbirth and promote normal delivery. The Lamaze philosophy is that women have a right to give birth free from routine medical interventions. But at the same time, they educate women so that when interventions are needed, or pain relief medication is desired, women are able to give true informed consent. Classes also include the first moments after birth. Each class has a specific curriculum that includes learning about common medical interventions and pain relief such as an epidural in an evidence based, non-biased manner.
Although Lamaze have been in vogue abroad for over half a century now, in India, the concept of childbirth education has trickled in only in the last decade but is catching on well in the metros.
