It is advisable to always split the duty of attending to your baby with your partner. Instead of one parent staying up the whole night swaddling and feeding the baby, parents can take turns to attend to the baby through the night.
Also when parents are staying awake, it is advisable for them to gorge on some power snacks.
Two popular approaches to the unpredictable sleep patterns of babies are the “cry it out” and “no cry” system. The “cry it out” system entails letting the baby cry without offering comfort which is believed to teach him to fall asleep alone.
The “no cry” system on the other hand believes that not attending the baby at night would diminish the trust the baby shares with his parents and can leave the newborn with permanent negative associations with bedtime and sleep.
Setting a proper bed time and nap time routine helps. Having the windows drawn, getting the baby changed into sleeping clothes, putting him in the cradle or crib is believed to psychologically accustom the baby and get him used to a preset sleep pattern.
The age-old traditions of humming a lullaby to the baby or gently cradling the baby cot or crib, is also believed to be a good sleep-inducer. Same is the case with a neat bed. It is also advised to maintain a clean and neat baby cot without too many toys and pillows to clutter the area. A neat, clean, sweet smelling bed is as much helpful in inducing good sleep for babies, as it is for adults.
