For the new mother, this is just the beginning of a life-long worry for her child; and of extraordinary love and happiness too. Only a mother will know how it felt when the baby moved inside her. Only a mother knows how she lived through days when she suffered from morning sickness. From this moment onward she has to take decisions keeping in mind that she cannot afford to do anything correctly if she is nursing guilt in her heart.
There is no such thing as “the perfect mother”. In order to be the best mother to a baby, all she needs to do is try her best. Parenting is all about triumphs and failures. The mother should not be hard on herself or get discouraged if she fails. Just like with everything else, practice makes perfect.
The new mother should not be afraid to ask for help. She should graciously accept all the help she can get, because chances are, the person offering the help may have been in this situation and knows how a little help can go a long way during the first few months.
It is very easy to lose sight of the relationship with her partner during the first few weeks and months of parenthood. Do not forget to take out time for your partner. Between the exhaustion from the sleepless nights, the demanding feeding schedule and the normal chores, it can be hard to find quality time to spend with your partner. Eating a meal together and having a chat about anything but the baby is a good way to start.
The mother should not forget to take time out for herself. It is absolutely crucial to take time for yourself on a daily basis. Eating wholesome meals, taking a walk for no less than 10 minutes can do wonders. She should get away from the baby to rejuvenate herself.
The key is not to build a new life around the baby, but to blend the baby into the existing life together.
