Biologically the age from the late teens to early twenties is the best time as the eggs or oocytes are fresh and the body’s reproductive system functioning with youthful vigour. Younger women are less likely to have developed chronic health problems. They also have the lowest rate of ectopic pregnancy, infertility, miscarriage etc.
But early pregnancy does not work in today’s social arrangement. Women in their late teens would still be completing their studies and in their early twenties the focus is on building a career. Having a baby is probably not on their horizon for a while yet.
Even if married by their mid or late twenties, most young couples still may feel that it is not yet time for parenthood. To get to a good place in their career may take a few more years during which having a child would not be practical. They may not feel financially as secure yet to have a child. The mother usually takes a career break or lets career take a backseat during the early years of the children. So the financial aspect is actually an important consideration when planning for a baby.
It is important to remember that as the maternal age increases there is an increase in the chances of there being problems in the pregnancy. After the age of thirty-five, pregnancy is considered intrinsically high-risk for miscarriage and birth defects. It may also take longer to conceive after the age of thirty-five.
However having a child at a later age has its pro too. Having made it to a stable place in her career the mother is ready to enjoy her child without worrying about money or career. So she will have more time to devote to the children in the growing years.
All in all, though, the pros and cons need to be considered by every couple according to their own situation. For some it may be preferable to have children while young so that the mother can go back to her career and continue without a break. Having the babies at a younger age also means that the parents have more energy to run around with the children when young. For others however it is preferable to be secure and settled before welcoming children into the family fold.
Medical advances now have surely made it safer to have children later than what it used to be earlier, so women do have the choice to go for a late pregnancy. And many women are making the choice to do so.
The magic age to have a baby is whenever it is right for you!
