The shift from being a couple to being parents is a joyous one but at the same time can be tumultuous too. The idea of having a baby can be overwhelming to some people, while others may look forward to being parents from the moment the news is confirmed. Whatever the feeling about the news, there is no doubt that the relation between a couple changes when they become parents from being a couple.
The preparation for the baby begins even before it is born. From finding out everything there is to know about the pregnancy, eating and exercising to keeping fit, getting the house ready for the baby and parenting classes, it is a hectic time for both parents. Along with getting things ready for baby, it is very important to spend time with each other and do things that are enjoyed by both now. Once the baby is born, it will become difficult to find time for anything else other than the baby, including each other.
Now is the time to sit and talk about the dreams and plans that both of you have for the baby. Sometimes one parent’s idea of bringing up children may be fundamentally different from the other’s which can be a cause of discordance and clashes over whose ideas are to be followed. It could be about things like vaccination, religion, handling the baby, even things like what kind of diaper to use can become important issues in such discussions. Talking about your ideas before the baby is born helps in working out ways of handling situations so that both of you are in agreement when the time comes.
A child born to parents who are happy and respect each other grows up happy and with a high self-esteem. Since the days of pregnancy are the last days that you get to spend with each other exclusively before the baby arrives, it is the time to do things that you may not have time to do after the birth. Take that dream vacation, go out for dinner at that fancy restaurant and anything else that you may want to do by yourselves. Doing things together as parents-to-be will bring you closer than you are already. Keep in mind not to overexert yourself though and pick activities that are not too strenuous. Also, keep aside some special plans to fulfil once your baby is older. Create a special album to store the memories of your special days as the parents-to-be couple.
