By the time you miss periods you already are 4 weeks pregnant. You can opt for a home pregnancy test or go to a clinic and take a pregnancy test.
If you take a home pregnancy test on the first day of your missed period or within a day or two, and you get a prominent second line or a plus sign, it may be that you are pregnant with twins. Most women who are carrying a single baby experience a faint line. Home pregnancy kits detect a level of the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Woman carrying twins are likely to have higher levels of this hormone and therefore a stronger positive or earlier result.
A woman who is carrying multiples has a higher level of hCG. But you will be confirmed whether you are having twins once you go for your first ultrasound test. Finding out that you are expecting twins may come as a complete shock, and it may take a while for you to absorb it. It is very natural for you to worry about how you will cope with two babies at once, or about the complications associated with a twin pregnancy or are you and your partner financially capable of raising two children together.
Twin pregnancy symptoms are not so much different to normal pregnancy symptoms, but they are felt much earlier. Morning sickness, nausea, fatigue, food cravings or food aversions are some of the common symptoms of the first trimester.
Women who are most likely to have twins are as follows:
- Conceiving after the age of 30 years or more.
- If the mother has had fertility assistance to conceive.
- If the mother has a history of already having twins or if there are twins in the biological family.
- If the mother is overweight with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of more than 25
