An infant’s sore throat is often caused by a cold or flu virus. Most of the viral infections need not be treated with medication and go away within seven to ten days. Home remedies can help the infant’s to swallow and sleep comfortably.
Some home remedies for the infant who has a sore throat are:
- Make sure that the air in the infant’s room is not too dry. Run a humidifier to add moisture to the room, add a few drops of essential oil like eucalyptus; the vapours will help soothe the infant’s sore throat.
- The infant needs to be hydrated. The mother should offer as much breast milk or formula milk as the baby wants. Sucking the milk keeps the back of the throat wet, which soothes the infant’s throat.
- Ginger and honey – Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties which soothe the throat and fights infection. Grate ginger and add honey to it. Let the baby suck it. This is a very effective home remedy to treat an infant’s sore throat.
- Fry few cloves of garlic, some ajwain (aniseed) and kalaunji (onion seeds) in excess mustard oil, strain the oil and store in a dry container. Massaging the chest, back and neck region of the baby with this oil provides relief to the baby suffering from cold and flu.
